Braidwood, New South Wales, is a historic town located in the Southern Tablelands region of Australia. Its history dates back to the early 19th century when it was established as a stopover point for travellers and as a centre for the local agricultural industry.
The area where Braidwood now stands was originally inhabited by the Walbanga and Wadjanba Indigenous peoples. European exploration of the region began in the early 1820s, with the first European settlers arriving shortly after. The town was officially surveyed and laid out in 1839 by surveyor Robert Hoddle.
Braidwood quickly grew into a bustling town due to its strategic location on the road between Sydney and the goldfields of Araluen. During the Australian gold rushes of the mid-19th century, Braidwood experienced a significant influx of fortune-seekers, which further fueled its growth. The discovery of gold in nearby areas such as Majors Creek in the 1850s contributed to Braidwood's prosperity.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Braidwood continued to thrive as a center for agriculture, mining, and timber industries. The town became known for its picturesque streetscapes and well-preserved historic buildings, many of which date back to the gold rush era.
Braidwood also played a role in Australian history as the site of several significant events. During the 1860s, the town was a center of anti-Chinese sentiment, culminating in the infamous riots of 1861 when European miners attacked Chinese miners and their camps.
In more recent times, Braidwood has become known for its vibrant arts community and as a popular destination for tourists seeking to explore its rich history and picturesque surroundings. The town's historic buildings and heritage-listed sites continue to attract visitors from all over Australia and beyond.
Today, Braidwood retains much of its historic charm while also embracing modern amenities and conveniences. It remains an important center for the surrounding agricultural region and continues to celebrate its heritage through events, festivals, and preservation efforts.
